Last year, Kayla and Evan moved into their first home and welcomed their first puppy Bailey, but they never got around to taking holiday family portraits. Sound familiar? I see this all the time as a Minneapolis family photographer, but there’s no time like the present!
This year, with the holiday season fast approaching, Evan got the ball rolling so they could cross holiday photos off their list. We love a guy who enjoys taking photos!
In planning their session, it was clear they wanted Bailey to be the focal point of their shoot. Although the fall colors were no longer an option in November, we got creative and came up with other location ideas. The winning suggestion was a lakeside park with plenty of tree coverage. That’s when we knew Snail Lake Park in Shoreview, MN would be an ideal fit!
Even though it was barely 20 degrees on the day of their shoot, it didn’t deter us from capturing some wonderful family moments. My favorite part of the day was how much we all embraced the colder weather, Bailey included!
When Kayla asked if we could end the shoot by the cozy fireplace in her home, I said, “Abso-freaking-lutely!” After a quick outfit change from winter peacoats to ugly Christmas sweaters, we settled into their festively decorated home and lit the fireplace. I couldn’t believe her Christmas tree was nine feet tall!
Kayla and Evan were excited to receive their gallery of photos, and they loved how the candids turned out with Bailey walking toward the camera. Since I have two rescue pups at home, I know how to capture silly, candid moments with pets. The key is to embrace the chaos, as I often tell my clients, and trust the process.
Kayla told me one of her friends said the photo where they put ornaments on the tree looked like it belonged in an L.L. Bean catalog. I’ll take that as a compliment! I can’t wait to receive their Christmas card later this year.
