Behind the Lens: Q&A with Aly of Aly Cross Photography

Wondering if we’re a great match? This fun Q&A with me—the photographer behind Aly Cross Photography—will answer your questions!

I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it a million more times!

There’s a photographer  for everyone, and the photographer you choose to work with is so important to the success and enjoyment of your session. The more you love your photographer, the more you’ll love your photographs!

When you have a great connection with the person behind the lens, they’ll be able to find deeper and more creative ways to tell your story. You’ll feel like you’re on the same wavelength, which translates into stunning imagery that showcases who you are.

With so many Minnesota-based photographers to choose from, you might be looking to narrow down your selections to find the perfect fit. After you’ve looked through the photographer’s Instagram, portfolio, and website, the next step is to get to know who they really are. That way, you’ll know if you mesh well.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I love some good small talk. But let’s dig into the deeper stuff that will help us get to know each other!

What’s one childhood memory that still makes you smile?

This one’s an easy favorite! Thanks to old family videos, one memory that always makes me smile is fishing with my dad at my grandparents’ cabin. It’s such a sweet little snapshot of simpler times. A few years ago, I surprised my parents by transferring all our home videos from VHS to digital—let’s just say I cried through the process. I’m a total sentimental sap over here.

What’s your favorite way to spend a weekend?

My favorite kind of weekend starts slow with a warm cup of coffee and a quiet moment with my husband Jesse before the day gets rolling. From there, we’re usually off on some kind of adventure with our rescue dogs, Sam and Rocky, whether it’s a hike through the woods or a walk  by the lake. Watching them explore nature is the absolute best. The rest of the weekend is all about soaking up time with our favorite people—sharing laughs, good food, and those little moments that turn into core memories. And, of course, I always make space to slow down and recharge before the week ahead rolls in.

Do you prefer spontaneous adventures or well-planned activities?

Honestly, I’m a mix of both! I love a good spontaneous adventure—like the time our flight to Florida got canceled, and within hours, I had a full road trip planned to Nashville instead. We hit St. Louis, Nashville, and Chicago and had the best time making memories on the fly.

But most of the time, I’m the type of person who plans trips with color-coded itineraries, restaurant recs, and a list of must-do experiences. There’s something so fun about mapping it all out (and yes, my travel spreadsheets are next-level). I think I could’ve been a travel planner in another life, but I love bringing my love for planning into customizing my sessions and wedding day timelines for each client.

What is your love language?

My love languages are words of affirmation and gift giving, which basically means I’m a total sucker for a heartfelt note or a thoughtful little surprise. I love finding small, meaningful ways to show people I’m thinking of them, and kind words stick with me forever. Whether it’s a sweet message, a handwritten letter, or a “just because” gift, those are the things that fill my cup.

If money and time weren’t an issue, what would your dream life look like?

If money and time weren’t a thing—and I could bring my whole family along—I’d split the year between a few of my favorite places. I’d spend a few months living in Spain or Italy, wandering cobblestone streets with a camera in hand. I’d capture everyday beauty as it unfolded before my eyes and soak up the slow, sunny lifestyle.

Then, I’d head back to Minnesota for those golden May-through-September months—because nothing beats wildflower blooms, lake days, and warm evenings up north. The rest of the year  I’d be road-tripping across the U.S. with Jesse and the dogs, chasing National Parks while documenting every mountain view, starry night, and quiet, in-between moment with my camera. That blend of adventure, family, and nature? That’s the dream.

What’s one goal you have for this year?

This year, my heart is set on building a deeper community. Whether it’s in my personal life or through my business, I’m making it a priority to spend more quality time with the people who matter most—friends, family, clients, and fellow small business owners. I want to create space for real connection, meaningful conversations, and those little moments that remind me why I do what I do.

What’s the weirdest or most unique job you’ve ever had?

Oh boy, my career path had quite a few detours! Back when I was working at a brewery, I  considered going back to school for my Master’s in education. Jesse, being the wise one, suggested I try working in a school first—and thank goodness he did.

I ended up becoming a substitute teacher for a grand total of four days, and it was hands-down the hardest job I’ve ever had. Picture me in charge of 30 wild kiddos, getting a soccer ball to the face, and chasing a kindergartener through a stairwell during gym class. Safe to say, that short-lived teaching stint made it very clear that I was meant to explore a different path.

While it’s funny to look back on this early teaching experience, I learned a valuable lesson about the importance of trying new things and not needing to go “all in” from day one. It’s worth it to test out new ideas and experiment to see what’s right for you. It’s a message I often share with seniors during our senior photography sessions, too!

What’s your go-to karaoke song?

All Star by Smash Mouth. It never gets old and usually pumps up the crowd!

If you could swap lives with any animal for a day, which would you choose?

Hands down, I’d swap lives with my dog Sam. That guy has relaxation down to an art form. He spends his days napping in the sun, stretching out in cozy spots, and fully embracing the “no stress, just vibes” lifestyle. Honestly, I admire his commitment to doing absolutely nothing, and I love that for him. He’s living the dream.

What questions didn’t I answer?

I’d love to connect and chat over a cup of coffee, so reach out so we can be besties!
