Stillwater, MN Engagement Session

Lauren and Austin are high school sweethearts that celebrated their 10 year dating anniversary the day after their engagement session and if you ask me, I think that’s just about the perfect way to capture your love! Their sweet dog, May, joined us for the adventure and let me tell you, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a cuter dog (I may or may not say that to everyone).

In planning their session, they wanted both a nature and city vibe, which made Stillwater the perfect fit! We started at Square Lake Park and adventured amongst the pines and along the water in such bright sunshine that you wouldn’t have even known it was March. The biggest reason why I love Square Lake is because just 15 minutes away is the beautiful and historic Downtown Stillwater.

So, after a quick outfit swap we journeyed into the city. I absolutely love Stillwater because it has so many unique textures and colors that can make any session pop. A few must see spots for your Stillwater engagement photos include the gazebo along the river (check out that sweet green ceiling), the iconic pedestrian bridge, and the restaurant-lined sidewalks. As we were walking the sidewalks, I could have sworn Lauren and Austin read my mind because as soon as I looked at the crosswalk and saw that we had the walk sign, I immediately bolted across the street and they followed, hand-in-hand, looking cute as ever! I love how candid and unprompted those photos turned out, because they truly felt like I was their own personal paparazzi following them around for their engagement photos outdoors.

Oftentimes clients specifically want their session in the late summer or early fall because of the greenery and changing leaves along with prime-time golden hours. However, there are so many benefits to having a session in the “off-season”. First, there’s generally less people out and about, which means there’s less background noise that either needs to be removed or worked around when I’m posing you. Second, my editing queue is generally much shorter, which means you get your photos even sooner! I know how much fun it is to be in front of the camera and I know how long it can feel waiting to get your pictures back.
