What Type of Photography Session Is Right for Me?

With so many types of photography sessions to choose from, how do you find the best fit for you or your family? Read for more.

When you’re thinking about booking a photo session—whether it’s for updated family portraits, celebrating a milestone like senior graduation, or just because—one of the first questions I most often hear is “What type of photography session is right for me?”

With so many options available, from full-length custom sessions to quick minis, it can feel a little overwhelming to figure out what best fits your vibe, schedule, and budget..

So today, I’m breaking down the different types of photography sessions I offer at Aly Cross Photography—including a favorite that’s making a comeback: mini-sessions!

Let’s dive into what sets each type of session apart and help you figure out what’s the best fit for you right now.

Full & Milestone Sessions: The Storytellers

Whether you’re celebrating something big, like an engagement or graduation, or simply want to hit pause and soak in this meaningful chapter of life, a full photography session is where the magic happens.

These sessions give us space to breathe, play, and explore. With about an hour together, we’re not rushing through a shot list or trying to fit an efficient timeline—we’re telling a story. We’ll chase golden light, let the kids warm up to the camera, explore your favorite spot as a couple, and lean into those in-between, unposed moments that often turn out to be everyone’s favorite.

Full sessions are perfect for:

  • Families looking for variety and connection while embracing the chaos with heartfelt candids
  • High school seniors wanting multiple outfits and vibes to honor exactly who they are in this very moment
  • Couples celebrating an engagement, anniversary, proposal, or simply wanting to preserve their love story
  • Expecting parents wanting to capture that sweet bump or joyful additions to the family
  • Newborn snuggles, puppy gotcha days, birthday balloons, or a “just because” moment that’s worth remembering

Some people call these milestone sessions, but really, they’re just about honoring whatever season you’re in—big or small. These sessions meet you where you are and visually capture your joy to be remembered for years to come.

Best for:
Folks who want a full storytelling experience with time for play, personality, and a variety of moments to remember.

Mini-Sessions: Short & Sweet

Okay, now for the fun part: mini-sessions are BACK, and just in time for the full swing of summer craziness. This will help us get the most out of the dreamiest summer lighting without requiring you to be in front of the camera all evening long. For this reason, many men and families love these mini-sessions!

If you’ve never booked one before, a mini-session is exactly what it sounds like—a shorter, more focused version of a full session. Think of it as a highlight reel. We spend 15–20 minutes at a predetermined location and knock out a beautiful little gallery that still feels very you.

Mini-sessions are ideal for:

  • Families with littles who don’t love a long photo session (we get in, get smiles, and get out!)
  • Busy parents looking for updated photos that don’t require taking a day off of work (phew!)
  • Couples or individuals who want a handful of fresh portraits
  • Anyone who is curious about working together  but aren’t ready for a full session…yet!

Mini-sessions are a great choice because they’re quick, more affordable in cost, and still pack a punch when it comes to capturing your personality. However, I only offer mini-sessions a few times throughout the year, so if you’ve been waiting for a sign, this is it.

Best for:

People who love simplicity, seasonal photos, or are craving a quick refresh without the full session commitment.

Branding & Content Sessions: For Creatives and Makers

I also offer branding sessions for small business owners and entrepreneurs who need scroll-stopping content. Whether you’re a service provider, artist, maker, or coach, these sessions are designed to help your personality shine through your photos.

Depending on your needs, these can range from a quick 30-minute headshot update to a full or half-day of lifestyle content creation. We’ll collaborate to plan a session that reflects your brand and connects with your ideal clients.

Best for:

Entrepreneurs who want modern, colorful content that feels natural and true-to-you.

What type of photography session is right for you?

It all comes down to what you’re hoping for:

  • Want flexibility, multiple looks, and time to relax in the moment? You’ll want to book a full session.
  • Need quick, seasonal, joyful images in a snap? A mini-session is your best choice.
  • Ready to show up online with fresh, intentional branding content? It sounds like a custom branding session is right up your alley.

And if you’re still not sure, I’m just a message away and would love to help you figure it out!
